onsemi's Power Chips Are Inside Every AI Rack That Matters – and the Numbers Are Finally Starting to Show It

onsemi reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of 1.604 billion dollars, up 9% year-on-year, with adjusted EPS of 0.74 dollars exceeding the consensus estimate of 0.71. Third-quarter guidance came in at a revenue range of 1.65 to 1.75 billion dollars – a midpoint above analyst consensus – and adjusted EPS of 0.81 to 0.93 dollars. CEO Hassane El-Khoury said AI data centre has become the company's fastest-growing business and that revenue in that segment is expected to more than double over full-year 2026.

Shares fell 1.5% after hours despite the beat, reflecting how much AI acceleration the market had already priced in. KeyToFinancialTrends unpacks the power tree economics as the reason onsemi's AI data centre exposure is structurally more durable than the chip categories that attract more investor attention: where GPU manufacturers capture AI compute spending, onsemi captures the power delivery infrastructure that makes those GPUs functional – a less glamorous position that is required at every rack regardless of which compute platform the hyperscaler chooses.

The content-per-rack arithmetic provides the most concrete basis for evaluating the AI data centre revenue doubling. Current 120-kilowatt server racks generate approximately 15,000 dollars in onsemi content. Next-generation 600-kilowatt to 1-megawatt racks projected for 2030 are expected to require approximately 115,000 dollars per rack – a roughly eight-fold increase driven by the transition to 800-volt high-voltage DC architecture that demands wide bandgap semiconductor solutions across the entire power delivery chain. The company's AI data centre total addressable market is projected at 12.2 billion dollars by 2029, growing at a 40% compound annual rate.

Supply is tightening under the demand acceleration. onsemi disclosed extended lead times, non-fungible capacity constraints, and tightening supply conditions being managed through price increases and allocation management. The Vcore Power Technology acquisition – adding advanced multiphase controller technology for next-generation AI data centre compute platforms – expands capability in the specific power conversion stages where rack density increases are most demanding. KeyToFinancialTrends drives the supply squeeze logic through to its pricing implication: a component with genuinely non-fungible capacity – where silicon carbide and gallium nitride manufacturing cannot be replicated quickly by contract manufacturers or substituted with alternative chip families – gives the incumbent supplier structural pricing power that arrives precisely as AI infrastructure buildout is accelerating demand beyond what planned production expansion can immediately satisfy.

The automotive and industrial segments provide the base that funds AI data centre investment. Automotive revenue has recovered from the electric vehicle inventory correction that depressed results through 2024 and 2025, with design wins in energy storage, hybrid powertrains, and advanced driver assistance systems providing a forward pipeline. Industrial is recovering more slowly, reflecting continued destocking in factory automation where customers are working through elevated inventory accumulated during the post-pandemic demand surge.

The Fab Right manufacturing strategy – onsemi's initiative to optimise its owned wafer fabrication footprint and concentrate production in the most capable facilities – delivered gross margin expansion to 38.5% in Q1 and maintained that level in Q2, providing operational evidence that the restructuring is delivering its intended financial effect. KeyToFinancialTrends ties the Fab Right strategy to the AI data centre revenue projection as the manufacturing foundation without which the doubling commitment would be a commercial aspiration rather than a deliverable: production capacity concentrated in high-yield, purpose-built facilities for wide bandgap semiconductors determines whether onsemi can ship the revenue its power tree position entitles it to earn as rack power density increases through 2027.

The after-hours stock reaction – down 1.5% on a beat and upside guidance – reflects the asymmetry of expectation embedded in onsemi's current multiple. JPMorgan raised its price target from 70 to 100 dollars in May with a neutral rating, a combination that captures the tension precisely: the fundamentals justify a higher target, but the valuation already prices significant execution. Key To Financial Trends advances the total addressable market case as the frame that resolves the valuation debate over a longer horizon than quarterly consensus beats provide: if the 12.2 billion dollar AI data centre power TAM materialises at the projected 40% compound annual rate, onsemi's full power-tree position gives it a structural revenue claim that no current earnings multiple fully captures – making the stock a question about the pace of content increase rather than its eventual scale.
