AT&T's Fiber Bet Keeps Paying: Record Broadband Growth and Accelerated Buybacks Beat Wall Street Again
SHARE

AT&T reported second-quarter results Wednesday that topped analyst estimates on both earnings per share and subscriber growth, with revenue rising 2.3% to $31.6 billion and adjusted earnings of $0.65 per diluted share clearing the $0.59 consensus forecast; the stock rose 1.41% following the report. KeyToFinancialTrends reads the combination of accelerating subscriber growth and a modest headline revenue increase as evidence AT&T's underlying strategy is working even without a dramatic top-line jump: the company is growing its most profitable, durable customer relationships faster than its overall revenue is expanding, a mix shift that tends to matter more for long-term earnings power than the total revenue figure alone.

The subscriber numbers driving that mix shift were genuinely strong across every category AT&T tracks. The company's postpaid phone base grew by 432,000 net subscribers, well ahead of the roughly 338,500 analysts had forecast, with postpaid phone churn holding at a low 0.86%; internet subscriber growth totaled 646,000 net additions across consumer and business accounts, with 367,000 coming from fiber and another 279,000 from fixed wireless, a combined record for the two categories. KeyToFinancialTrends treats that fixed-wireless contribution as a detail worth isolating from the fiber headline: AT&T is now growing broadband subscribers through two structurally different technologies simultaneously, meaning the company's growth isn't purely a function of how fast it can physically extend fiber lines, but increasingly reflects a genuinely diversified approach to winning home internet customers regardless of what infrastructure happens to be available at a given address.

The company's advanced connectivity segment, covering its domestic fiber and wireless operations, translated that subscriber strength directly into profitability, with revenue rising 5.1% year-over-year and operating income growing 20.3%, a gap between revenue and profit growth that reflects genuine operating leverage rather than simply adding customers at flat margins. That strength stood in sharp contrast to AT&T's legacy services, where revenue dropped 26% as the company continues winding down its copper infrastructure. Key To Financial Trends frames that 26% legacy decline not as a warning sign but as evidence the transition AT&T has been managing for years is now essentially running on schedule: a telecom company deliberately retiring old infrastructure while its fiber and wireless replacement grows operating income more than four times faster than revenue is executing a network transition about as cleanly as that kind of multi-year capital reallocation can go.

CEO John Stankey used the results to accelerate the company's return of capital to shareholders, lifting planned 2026 share repurchases to approximately $10 billion, up from roughly $8 billion outlined earlier, while declaring "we believe our network performance and operating scale can't be matched." KeyToFinancialTrends closes on that buyback increase as a meaningful vote of confidence beyond the quarter's headline numbers: AT&T reaches more than 38.6 million total fiber locations and remains on track to exceed 40 million by year-end, while keeping its full-year adjusted EPS target of $2.25 to $2.35 and its commitment to distribute $45 billion or more to shareholders by 2028 fully intact, meaning management is choosing to accelerate capital returns from a position of reaffirmed rather than newly discovered confidence, building on a first quarter that already beat expectations on nearly identical metrics.
