Recently, SpaceX filed for an IPO, which Musk claims will be a significant step toward the creation of orbital data centers. These centers will support computing power for AI, processing data in conditions that can no longer be efficiently managed on Earth. The company plans to launch up to one million satellites, which will function as orbital data centers. Musk asserts that this project will help overcome limitations related to energy and water scarcity on our planet.

However, Musk’s ambitions face several significant obstacles. One of the biggest challenges for SpaceX is the high cost of launches. Currently, SpaceX uses Falcon rockets, the cost of which remains high at several thousand dollars per kilogram. To make the project financially viable, the launch costs need to be drastically reduced, which will require major investments in new technologies that are still in development.

Expected problems with chip cooling in vacuum conditions, as well as radiation exposure and the need for frequent equipment replacement at orbital centers, all require solutions that are not yet commercially available. Given the rapid development of AI technologies, such chips may quickly become obsolete, needing replacement every few years. Musk is confident that these problems can be solved with the advancement of technology and the repeated use of Starship rockets. However, the question arises: how feasible is the mass use of such technology in the foreseeable future?

Microsoft’s experience with its underwater data center project could serve as an important lesson for SpaceX. Despite some successes in energy efficiency through natural cooling, Microsoft abandoned the project due to its unprofitability and lack of demand for such technology. It is crucial to understand that despite technological achievements, the economic viability of such solutions does not always justify the enormous costs. For Musk’s project to be commercially successful, the cost of launches must be significantly reduced, and the technology itself needs to reach a new level. This is a very ambitious goal, especially considering that the current development pace of the Starship rocket has fallen behind its intended timelines. Additionally, it’s important to recognize that the creation of orbital data centers for AI may become a niche solution rather than a mass one. Space may indeed become an important platform for data storage and processing, but it is unlikely to replace existing terrestrial IT infrastructure. In the coming years, such projects are more likely to serve as niche solutions rather than mass infrastructure systems for AI.

Musk claims that demand for space-based data centers will grow as AI needs increase in the future. According to him, AI will be essential for maintaining a world where autonomous cars, robotic systems, and space travel become commonplace. However, despite this optimism, experts from KeyToFinancialTrends believe that the real growth of the market for such technologies won’t happen until at least a few decades from now.

Space-based data centers for AI may eventually become a reality, but for now, this remains a long-term project with high risks.
